The Valencia orange tree is celebrated worldwide for its sweet, juicy fruits and high-quality juice. But behind this seemingly resilient crop, many smallholder farmers face challenges that threaten growth and productivity. Proper soil care, timely fertilization, and attentive management are critical; without them, even a healthy-looking tree can struggle.
Farmer Michael from Boyani Village, Rabai, was all too well. Despite his consistent efforts, his Valencia orange trees were stunted, producing very few flowers and fruits. “I felt like I was losing hope,” Michael recalls. Limited flowering meant smaller harvests, which directly impacted his income and access to fresh fruit for his family and community.

Recognising the hurdles faced by farmers like Michael, FIPS Africa stepped in to provide support. With a focus on sustainable agriculture, FIPS introduced solutions that are both simple and effective: a combination of WonderGro soil conditioner and organic manure to restore soil fertility and improve tree health.

Implementing these interventions required careful guidance. Village-Based Advisor (VBA) Irene Bahati worked closely with Michael, demonstrating the proper application of manure and WonderGro. She monitored the tree’s progress, adjusted care techniques, and coached Michael on best practices for long-term tree management.
By mid-season, the transformation was remarkable. The Valencia orange tree began producing significantly more flowers than in previous years, a clear sign of recovery and a promising fruiting season ahead. The lush green leaves and abundant blooms reflected not only the effectiveness of the inputs but also the dedication of both farmer and advisor.

This success highlights a broader lesson for smallholder farmers: targeted, sustainable interventions can make a huge difference with minimal investment. Simple, well-timed practices like soil enrichment and proper fertilisation can restore tree health, increase yields, and secure livelihoods.
Beyond the immediate benefits, Michael’s story serves as an inspiration for other farmers in the region. It demonstrates that even struggling trees can thrive with expert guidance, the right inputs, and persistent care, proving that agriculture is both a science and a matter of patience.
As Boyani Village witnesses the blooming of Michael’s Valencia orange tree, it stands as a testament to the power of knowledge, intervention, and commitment. For smallholder farmers across Kenya, this story is a reminder: with the right support, growth is always possible.
