Better cuttings, higher yields: improving on-farm seed potato production

FIPS Africa is showcasing practical findings on improving seed potato production at the World Potato Congress 2026 in Naivasha, Kenya, from 26 to 30 Oct.

Our poster, Better cuttings, higher yields: optimising agronomic practices for on-farm seed potato production, explores how the quality of Potato Rooted Apical Cuttings (PRACs) and their management influence tuber numbers and yields.

The findings highlight the importance of good-quality cuttings, appropriate planting depth, timely hilling, crop nutrition, and adequate rainfall. The poster reports mean yields of 36 tonnes per hectare for Shangi, 62 for Unica and 68 for Wanjiku under the conditions studied. It also examines how cutting quality can influence seed multiplication over successive seasons.

For FIPS Africa, this learning supports a wider goal: strengthening local potato seed systems. Helping Decentralised Seed Multipliers improve production can support more viable seed enterprises and more reliable access to quality planting material for neighbouring farmers.

Explore the poster and meet our team at the congress to discuss the findings, their application in different farming contexts and opportunities for collaborative research and practical learning.
